Celebrating Success at the Sir Michael Davies Lecture

bySimon Berney-Edwards

At the Sir Michael Davies Lecture on the 9th October, we were joined by a small selection of the members who have successfully completed their Certification assessment over the last year.

Recognising achievements

Available to attend the lecture and to receive their certificates from EWI President Lord Hodge were Certified Fellows Colin Mumford, Kathryn Newns and Chris Turner. They were also joined by Certified Member Sandeep Senghera.

  • Colin Mumford is a consultant neurologist in medicolegal practice. He is based in Edinburgh but works throughout the UK and Ireland. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Neurology at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Kathryn Newns is a Clinical Psychologist and specialises in the effects of trauma in both adults and children. I have an interest in pain presentations and have an MSc in pain management approaches.
  • Chris Turner is an experienced commercial pilot, currently an instructor and examiner on Boeing 787 aircraft. In a forty five year aviation career he has amassed over 18,000 flying hours, worldwide, on a variety of jet, turboprop and light aircraft.
  • Sandeep Senghera is a Dentist specialising in the treatment of traumatic injuries, including the quantification and prognosis of remedial treatment, including crowns, veneers, bridgework, osseointegrated implants and root canal treatment.

What is Certification

For the legal profession, it’s assurance that by instructing an EWI Certified Expert, they’re enlisting a professional who understands their role — and can ultimately deliver.

To get EWI Certification, applicants must already be highly experienced Experts, with the assessment process building on the vetting procedures in place for EWI membership. They will be assessed on all the core competencies  required to be an Expert Witness, recognising those who can demonstrate excellence in report writing, discussions between Experts, and giving oral evidence in court.

Crucially, applications for Certification (and revalidation of Certification) are assessed on the Expert’s ability to demonstrate actual practice in real scenarios.

EWI Certified Experts also commit to undertaking Continuing Professional Development and will be required to go through the Certification assessment every five years to revalidate their practice and retain their Certified status.

Experts who have achieved Certification will be identified as such and appear at the top of search results on the Institute’s Find an Expert Directory.

EWI Certification has been SCQF  credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and has been awarded 15 SCQF Credit Points at SCQF Level 11.

Why should experts consider applying?

•    Clear and demonstrable validation of your practice and commitment to professional development
•    Certified Expert Witnesses appear at the top of all search results on the EWI’s ‘Find an Expert Witness’ Directory
•    Use of the postnominals MEWI (Cert) or FEWI (Cert) (if you have been accepted as a Fellow of the Institute)
•    15 SCQF Credit Points at SCQF Level 11 (Masters Level) which you can transfer to another academic or vocational qualification (at the discretion of the learning provider)
