1. Submit Application

You will need to submit the following:

• Current CV
• Proof of regulatory body membership (if applicable) – certificate, directory screenshot, or confirmation letter. Psychologists must be HCPC registered. If no professional body applies, provide a brief explanation.
• Contact details for three instructing parties for reference checks.
• An anonymised Expert Witness report from a closed case (written within the last 3 years) that complies with relevant legislation. Include appendices. Anonymisation guidelines: 
• Replace names with standard identifiers (e.g. Claimant A, Defendant B)
• Change dates to XX/XX/XX but keep the report’s signing date
• Do not use fake names or dates
• An anonymised joint statement, if you have had experience drafting a Joint Statement.A list of any judgments where you've been named in hearings, or state the number of anonymous hearings (e.g. Arbitration) where you were named. Guidance for searching judgments is available in the Knowledge Hub section. 

• A list of CPD activities you've completed in the last three years to enhance your Expert Witness practice and a 250-word statement reflecting on how this has improved your practice as an Expert Witness.
• Confirmation you are willing to abide by the EWI Code of Professional Conduct.

If you do not have Professional Indemnity Insurance for Expert Witness work, you can apply to become part of the EWI Block Policy through Horner Blakey Insurance Brokers. To apply download the latest declaration form and upload it as part of your membership application. Once your application has been approved, we will pass your application over to Horner Blakey. 

2. Rules and Regulations Assessment

Complete an online assessment with 20 multiple-choice questions. The questions will test your knowledge of the rules and regulations of the court and jurisdiction where the Expert Witness report used in your application was submitted.

3. Statement on expert's meetings and joint statements

Write a 250–500-word about your experience participating in expert discussions and reflect on the joint statement submitted. If you have no experience or example of a joint statement, write about the practice in your jurisdiction.

Your statement should demonstrate:

• Knowledge of expert meeting procedures
• Effective communication and constructive participation (or how you would approach this)
• Understanding of the purpose and regulations for creating a joint statement

4. Examination/Cross-examination

You will take part in a 30-minute mock examination in chief/cross-examination with an advocate or barrister based on your submitted report. This will test your ability to give oral evidence and is usually conducted via Zoom, though in-person sessions are available.

The session will be recorded as part of your application.

Have you compled the Bond Solon cross-examination module?

If you have completed the Bond Solon cross-examination module in the last five years, you are exempt and can submit your certificate as proof.

5. Final Assessment

Your quiz results, documents (including reflections on joint statements and CPD) and three references will be combined into one form. Two assessors will review this form and the mock cross-examination recording separately.

If they agree on the result, we will inform you of the outcome. If they disagree, a third assessor will moderate.

You will receive your final result within four weeks of the mock cross-examination, provided all references are received on time.
