Courts are placing Expert Witnesses under greater scrutiny, with some facing serious penalties for not understanding their role.

By becoming a Certified Member of the EWI and proving that you adhere to our Code of Professional Conduct, you demonstrate that you take your responsibilities as an Expert seriously.

The EWI’s work in running a certification programme for expert witnesses is very welcome. Experience in high profile cases in the criminal courts shows that expert evidence that is properly presented and impartially delivered has the power to ensure that the guilty are convicted and the innocent are protected. The same is true in civil and family cases. In other words, the contribution experts can make to just and fair outcomes through the clear communication of reliable expert findings is significant. How to become a Certified Member

Certified Membership is achieved through successfully completing an assessment process that provides recognition and validation of your Expert Witness work. The assessment is based on actual practice in real scenarios.

Becoming a Certified member requires:

• Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
• Re-assessment every five years to revalidate practice and retain Certified status

The assessment:

• Builds on EWI membership vetting procedures
• Assesses all the core competencies required as an Expert Witness
• Evaluates excellence in:

• Rules and Regulations
• Report writing
• Expert discussions
• Giving oral evidence in court

National recognition

EWI Certification is SCQF credit-rated by the Qualifications Scotland at Level 11, with 15 SCQF credit points. The SCQF credit rating shows our adherence to stringent quality standards, with regular assessments conducted by the Qualifications Scotland. Certified members may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning towards further qualifications.

One-off application fee

Members: £335 / Non-Members: £435*

*Includes your application for EWI membership. Where a non-member is not successful, EWI will use the assessment to identify whether an alternative level of membership can be offered.

Membership fees

Annual Fee 2025/2026: £394.00 / £374 when you pay by Direct Debit.

Our subscription year runs 1st November - 31st October. Annual fees will be calculated pro-rata.

If you work for one of our Corporate Members you will benefit from a 15% Discount on the standard price. If you work for one of our Corporate Partners you will benefit from a 20% Discount on the standard price.
